Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) are the largest growing category of disability in the United States. The purpose of this video is to introduce teachers, parents, related service professionals, and pre-service teachers to guiding principles for educating children with autism spectrum and related behavioral and communication disabilities. IATTAP has produced this second DVD that provides more indepth information on the “Ten Guiding Principles” introduced in our first video and will soon have Spanish versions of both. We will continue to make additional topics available in this format as resources permit.

This video is a basic introduction to Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) appropriate for family members, school personnel including teacher assistants and general education staff as well as community members who want to learn about this increasingly prevalent disorder and basic effective strategies for interacting with individuals with ASD. In our efforts to increase information about ASD, Illinois Autism Training and Technical Assistance Project (IATTAP) produced the original DVD in conjunction with World Class Communication Technologies, LLC in 2005 and distributed them to all Illinois school districts. We are now pleased make this available to all who have access to a computer and internet through the streaming process. The statistics quoted in the original production are now out of date. The most current prevalence rate (December 2009 report) for ASD according to the Centers for Disease Control is now 1 in 110. There are 16,432 children counted in the special education category of Autism in Illinois schools as of December 2010 (the most current official count).
